Help thy neighbor bible verse11/18/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Jewish literature explains this preposition and its necessity in this command as an indication that it should really read, “Do (acts of) love to your neighbor. Yet it is also awkward in the Hebrew but they keep the preposition in there. It literally reads: “Thou shalt love to your neighbor.” Of course we will not translate it that way because it is awkward in the English. This word has the preposition Lamed before it. I don’t think that is the case.Įvery modern English translation of the Bible does not translate Leviticus 19:18 the way it really reads in the Hebrew with the exception of the Young’s Literal Translation. Both revenge and grudge seem to be closely related. The word grudge is natar which means to keep or maintain anger. The word revenge in Hebrew is naqam which means to seek to punish someone for a wrong that was committed against you. This commandment tells us we are not to seek revenge nor are we to bear a grudge. John 13:34: “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” Leviticus 19:18: “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I the LORD.” ![]()
